With all of the focus on your physical health, don’t forget to take care of your spiritual health! Being healthy from the inside out is more important than you might think. If you are not in tune with your mind, body and spirit, then you may never reach your full health potential. Here’s a look at one my favorite ways to get in touch with my spirit…
Mala 101: Mala beads, or prayer beads, are meditation garlands that have been worn for thousands of years in traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism, yoga and meditation. I would bet that most of you have seen some form of Mala beads in their life such a rosary or Greek worry beads. Traditionally Mala beads are used for meditation-reciting a positive affirmation or mantra along each bead to come into a more calming, connected and spiritual state. Sound familiar to all you dedicated Catholics out there??? Really the idea of Mala beads isn’t too far off and is actually quite beautiful. 108 beads are used traditionally to make the strand and other earthly materials can be added such as crystals and stones because of the energy they hold and the healing qualities they possess.
Why 108 beads? Some consider 108 a sacred number because it shows up in so many other spiritual practices…It is said that if one can be so calm in meditation to have only 108 breathes a day that enlightenment will come. There is said to be 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. In Islam 108 is used to refer to GOD. There are 108 virtues. In Buddhism/Japan a bell is chimed 108 times to celebrate the new year, and the list goes on….Coincidence? Probably not!
If all this Chakra, spirit talk is not your bag a beads (get it? Mala beads? I make myself laugh:)) then just wear them for their beauty. You can find Mala beads everywhere with just a quick Google search but my favorite are from a site called http://www.lovetinydevotions.com. The Tiny Devotion girls have really created some special pieces that are associated with intentions. How cool is it to have a constant reminder of your intentions around your neck???
Go check them out and don’t forget to holla for your Mala 🙂 Peace and Mala beads, nikki
