I don’t know about you but I am blown away at how fast this year has gone! I mean seriously, I woke up this morning and it was December! ‘Tis the season for holiday parties, eggnog, candy canes, and an immense amount of the most delicious items we wait all year for. How does a GLO God/Goddess survive such tempting treats you ask? Well my friends, one bite at a time🙂.
I, myself, have a more difficult time navigating the holidays because I am a sucker for tradition (and sweets but hey I’m working on it!). I love enjoying eggnog, peppermint bark, and all things shaped into a Christmas tree….so here’s the deal-let’s not only get through this season together, but enjoy every minute of it in a healthier way🙂. This month I will be focusing on how to stay fit through the holidays. I will share with you my healthier alternatives to traditional favorites and I will be asking the help of a fellow fitness guru (who just happens to be one of my best friends!) for her tips on how to maintain your weight even through all of the Christmas cheer! This chick will kick your booty into gear so tighten your shoe strings and get ready to sweat!
Let’s kick this month off with some tips on how to maintain your GLO through the holidays!
Everything in moderation! I know you have heard this time and time before but, my friends, it is a HUGE key to victory! I love the advice from Bethany Frankel: “Taste everything, eat nothing!” This is so genius! Have a few tastes of all of the yummy goodness at the table and then move on to the next item. This is especially true at Christmas parties where appetizers and finger foods are abundant. This leads me to my next piece of advice….
Don’t deprive yourself of the things you love! Eat it, savor it, love it…and then move on. When you deprive yourself of the things you want, that tends to be the only thing you can think about! These treats come around only once a year and I say GO FOR IT! One Christmas cookie isn’t going to tip the scaleJ.
Cocktails will be flowing and unfortunately that may mean that the calories will be as wellL. Eureka!!!! I have a plan;). Drinking a glass of water in between each cocktail will not only help keep you hydrated but it may limit your alcohol intake as well. Another great idea is to steer clear of sugary add-ins such as fruit juices and soda and stick with soda water or tonic water. Drink a vodka soda with lime or if you are feeling extra excited, throw a candy cane in there for a peppermint cocktail! You can even do this with wine-add half the amount of wine you normally would and fill the other half with soda water-voilà! You have a festive wine spritzer!
When headed to a Christmas party, ask if you can bring a dish to share. This way you have control over at least one of the items there. Make a healthy dish such as a gorgeous green salad with tons of veggies and a season favorite, cranberries. Hummus is also a great way to sneak in some protein and keep the calories to a minimum. Cut up carrots, celery, red peppers and use them to dip in the hummus.
Keep moving! I already know-it’s cold outside…you’re cozy on the couch…who wants to work out?? It is harder for me in the winter months to get my booty off the couch to get in a good sweat but let me just tell you right now-IT JUST HAS TO BE DONE! There’s no easy way around this one. Get your cute little bum to the gym and get moving! Just think of how great you will feel after you walked those 3 miles on the treadmill or stretched those legs on the yoga mat. No one ever said they regretted a workout!
Enjoy the heck out of this season! The holidays will we be over before we know it….savor every little moment of it. Don’t stress too much about which foods you are putting in your body. You know which foods make you feel energized and which foods drag you down (hello meet and cheese tray!). Listen to your body and trust that it knows what it needs. Splurge a little and keep moving and you should be just fine🙂
Peace & Candy Canes, nikki
