October is slipping away from me and before we know it, we’ll be sliding into the holidays. Before this month leaves us, I wanted to spend some time on breast cancer awareness.
In 2014 an amazing nurse practitioner felt a suspicious spot on my right breast. She felt like it was something I needed to get looked into and off I went to the breast surgeon for a mammogram and consultation. 🍁
In the meantime, because of my family history, she had me tested for the breast cancer Gene. As luck would have it, I tested positive for the brca2 gene. Luckily the suspicious spot turned out to be, of all things, a milk duct! Now, because I carry the breast cancer Gene, I get routine mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRI’s. I’ve also made a lot of Lifestyle adjustments such as removing certain products out of my regimen, loading up on supplements such as vitamin D and folic acid, being more intentional about my self breast exams, and making sure that I get enough exercise in my routine.
Here are some healthy habits I adopted to encourage breast health;
👉 to reduce the risk of breast cancer, it’s recommended that we get in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week . 👉To some, even 30 minutes a week has been beneficial.👉 Exercise is beneficial to breast cancer survivors, but only 1/3 of survivors meet recommended activity levels. 👉The risk of overweight women developing breast cancer after menopause is twice the risk than in lean women👉 and exercise reduces breast cancer risk for women of all body types, including lean women.
Load Up On Fruits and Veggies
Recent studies have suggested that eating a lot of fruits and veggies may be associated with a lowered risk for developing estrogen-receptor-negative breast tumors. Do your best to fill at least half your plate with these cancer busters!
Indulge in Some Chocolate!
By far my fave way to do my part in cancer prevention! Researchers have found a compound in dark chocolate that may fight fast-growing abnormal cells. The Darker the chocolate the better! Some chocolates (such as milk chocolate) are higher in sugar which is a no-no for cancer prevention…
Take a Chill Pill with all of the Sugar
Diets high is sugar can actually promote abnormal cellular growth. Abnormal cells love sugar and actually feeds on it. Try and switch out processed refined sugar from your diet with natural occurring sugars (fruit, dates, coconut sugar). You’ll probably lose a few LB’s while you’re at it…You’re welcome!
Psychological factors (stress, anxious feelings, etc.) may be linked to an increased risk of abnormal cellular growth. Find whatever soothes your inner ZEN and do it! My personal faves are my morning stretches, yoga, a hot-long shower (alone without kiddos), prayer and meditation, and essential oils.
Many essential oils have been linked to healthy cellular function. The King of all Oils, Frankincense, is known to support healthy cellular function when used internally.* When inhaled or diffused, Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness. DDR Prime is a proprietary blend of CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils that help protect the body against oxidative stress to cellular DNA.* The essential oils in DDR Prime provide antioxidant protection and support a healthy response to cellular stressors.* I use both of these oils in my daily routine to set the foundation of prevention.
I’m not getting much of this these days (with a 3-year-old and 5 month old sleep in rare). If you are one of the lucky ones that have children that actually sleep through the night, looks like you are right on track for prevention! Melatonin may actually help regulate estrogen and in turn help keep those boobies in good health. One way that helps me get quality sleep (when I actually do get to sleep) is Serenity Sleep Complex and Oil. dōTERRA Serenity combines essential oils renowned for their ability to lessen feelings of tension and calm emotions, and support a restful sleep when used aromatically.doTERRA Serenity Restful Complex is a unique combination of Lavender essential oil and natural plant extracts in a vegetarian softgel to help you get the refreshing sleep you need without leaving you feeling groggy and sleepy the next day.*
Remove the YUCK From Your Products
The two ingredients that I focused on getting rid of in my daily regimen are parabens & phthalates. Why these 2? Well, phthalates can mess with your hormones and damage reproductive health and parabens may also be toxic to reproduction, immune and neurological systems. Parabens have even been found in breast tumors (thus,linked to cancer). Yikes! So it is especially important for momma’s to be, breastfeeding momma’s , Babe’s, and kiddos to steer clear of products containing these 2 ingredients. I could go down a rabbit hole with this one but these ingredients are found in all kinds of products like shampoo and conditioners, cleanser, shower gel, lotion, anything labeled fragrance, nail polish, fabric detergent comma and softeners. Here’s a list of some of my fave YUCK free items.
These are just some of the ways I chose to focus on prevention. There are so many ways to alter your lifestyle and it really can get overwhelming trying to do everything at once. I know we are busy, and we’re told all the time how we need to make our health a priority (and we’re left wondering how to do it all in a 24-hour day 😩). Pick one! Pick a habit, get really good at it, and when it becomes a normal part of your day pick a new one.
In Good Health,
